The Gibson Hotel is a 250-bed 4-star hotel constructed as part of the mixed-use Point Village District Centre, located adjacent to the O2 Theatre on the North side of the Dublin Docklands. The hotel is entered through a dramatic double curved structure of glue-laminated ribs and glass that forms a memorable entrance from the new pubic plaza, Point Square. The visitor is brought up to Reception level at the 3rd floor via a series of escalators, or a pair of panoramic glazed lifts that offer views across the square. A concourse links the restaurant and bar and a south facing glazed terrace provides views down over the urban theatre of Point Square and all its activities. The bar and restaurant are arranged around a heavily landscaped courtyard space and offer a more intimate experience. The guest bedrooms open onto these courtyard gardens with ?Romeo and Juliet? balconies and openable windows, with external fixed cedar louvers that provide privacy and shading. Sustainable features of the hotel include a combined heat and power (CHP) plant together with other energy efficient features ensuring the building achieved a 20% improvement on Building Regulations. A green, sedum roof system was also selected to improve the local ecology of the area, and the timber was specified as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified.
