This project involved the refurbishment and extension of a post-war semi-detached house in Islington North London. It is SCALA architects Managing Director's own house. The original house was designed by Louis de Soissons, the architect best known for his buildings in Welwyn Garden Suburb. The house lies in the Canonbury Conservation area and there were complex discussions with the local authority planning and conservation officers. SCALA were able to persuade the council that the high quality design, materials and detailing would be an enhancement to the conservation area and planning consent was obtained in February 2008, with work starting on site the following month. The house was completely gutted, with the roof also being removed. An additional room was also added in the roof space. The house was also extended at ground floor level to the side and rear. Large sliding glass doors to the rear connect the house to the garden and create a family living area that is well used.
