SCABAL (Studio Cullinan And Buck Architects Ltd)
Third floor , 193 Fleet Street , LONDON , EC4A 2AH
This is a primary school belonging to the London Diocese (LDB), to which Enfield Education Authority would like to add a form of entry, from one to two. The authority have asked the LDB to manage the project and SCABAL have been appointed as architects with a view to examining two distinct options. The first is to simply extend the existing buildings and the second is to completely rebuild the school on an existing under-used park adjacent to the school site. To extend the school, which is currently in as poor state of repair and is insufficient as a single–form entry will require more than doubling it in size and building a new MUGA in the adjacent park as a facility to be shared between the school and the local community. To close the funding gap, the alternative option, which is to build a new two-form entry school from scratch, may be funded through a hybrid building which combines the new school with housing above. This combination has been successfully realised by the LDB in different parts of London, combining low-rent housing, student accommodation and flats for sale. Partnerships can be made between RSLs, London Universities and other housing providers, with the proposals often bringing forth community facilities as a key part of the mix, often as shared use with the school element. Another significant advantage for the community in this case is the improvement of the open space into a new park Furthermore as CDAs in Hackney SCABAL are looking at this approach on two of the secondary school sites.
