The brief was to create an Early Year’s Centre by connecting existing nursery and reception classrooms through refurbishment of a passage between them used as caretaker's workshop. Multiple openings were formed in the existing walls to create a visually coherent and open space, and to encourage and facilitate movement and play. The new translucent pink canopy together with new soft playground surfacing improves possibilities of outdoor play for all children from both classrooms. The project also included installation of new sound absorption panels in the school dining hall and was completed for a total construction budget of £140K. Works were undertaken while the school was in operation, enabled through a close relationship between SCABAL, the school and the appointed contractor.
