The Studio Four project involved the extension and refurbishment of an existing light industrial unit and had an overall contract sum of £650,000. Work commenced on site in May 1999 and was completed in November 1999, under a JCT IFC 98 form of contract. Works to the existing building included the complete re-cladding and re-glazing of the external envelope, refurbishment of all internal areas, upgrading of fire protection, new services and drainage installations. The striking 240m2 two-storey extension forms the frontispiece of the building and features a sweeping wing roof over an inclined, fully glazed façade, flanked by white rendered walls. A silver clad tower signals the main entrance. The extension accommodates reception and administration areas on the ground floor, with conference facilities on both floors and executive offices on the first floor. The existing ground floor was reconfigured to provide two 200m2 open plan office suites. Saunders Partnership’s offices on the first floor reflect the practice’s team structure, with four open plan bays and modular furniture, which is readily adapted to suit changing needs. Finishes and specification throughout are of a very high standard and reflect the practice’s design philosophy for clean, functional and efficient design of internal and external space.
