A ‘HOUSESTEAD’ The concept for the house is that the general functions which make up the daily and yearly routine of living, growing, evolving and maturing are broken down into their simplified components and expressed as separate buildings. We have night and daytime needs. The night time needs are met by sleeping, and the daytime is made up of ‘Living’ and ‘Working’ along with some ‘Miscellaneous’ functions. Like a Farmstead, these blocks are physically separate buildings. These form the essential components of the new ‘Housestead’. ARRANGING THE ‘HOUSESTEAD’ The components are arranged in the most logical manner. The Sleeping block will be on the east axis (morning sun etc). The Utility block is to the north (arrival, less need for expo- sure/views) and the main Living block is to the south (tracking sunlight, views, central position). The work building will be on the west axis. This arrangement, mirrors the pattern of movement our family has observed living in the annex over the last 15 years. The courtyard in front of the annex has acted as an external lobby for accessing the main house, the garages and the other cottages, in the sun, in the dark, rain or snow. ‘It’s great to be outdoors’.
