Overlooking the Alde Estuary in Aldeburgh, we replaced a1960’s house which had reached the end of its service life. With it’s pure timber structure, facade, framing, linings, flooring and fire treated Larch cladding, the design leans heavily on traditional buildings from the Tudor period and the pioneering modernist work by the likes of Walter Segal. It further evolves the tradition of building clear, economic, simple, rigorous and sustainable structures. This three storey timber framed house, employs an all-glass triple glazed elevation to take full advantage of the views of the estuary. A glulam skeleton sheathed in OSB provides lateral stability along with airtightness. The external walls utilise an innovative split stud arrangement for improved u-values and the cladding has been coordinated to express the primary and secondary framing to provide clues to buildings construction. The joists support a 100mm concrete floor to add thermal mass and aid the internal temperature fluctuations in the house. As a result of these measures, and despite the all glass facade, the house achieves an energy Efficiency Rating of 95%.
