A zero-carbon country estate set in 83 acres of rural countryside near Maidstone, Kent. The clients requested a country home of outstanding quality, rooted in its context, where they, their three daughters and their families could coexist as one: a house for four in one. It is modern & sculptural in design yet remains infused with a spirit of regional identity. The house responds strongly to the slope of the site determining the layout and organisation in section and plan. The house presents itself as the extrovert, embracing the outside; welcoming and open to guests, but also as an introvert, turning its back on the view to focus on a central contemplative courtyard. Extending beyond the house an estate cottage and barn complete the settlement. This project was designed with James Macdonald Wright
