New Build, Sited in AONB
A lovely project in the Mendips, the site currently features a small stone barn which is to be used as the basic footprint for the new house. The barn itself will need to be removed, with the new house reusing materials from the dilapidated structure where possible. The concept for this house was to break the mas of the new single storey house down by splitting the roof of the two wings, giving the impression of a cluster of buildings rather than one continuous structure. From the road side, this will have a very agricultural appearance, with stone from the original barn alongside small strips of glazing. The internal facing aspect is more glazed and open to embrace the features of the plot, with woodland bordering the disused quarry. Sustainability will be key, with timber frame construction, an air source heat pump and photovoltaic panels to make the house as off-grid as possible. A planning application has been prepared for submission soon.
