Alteration to existing property, Listed Building - Grade II
We were appointed to undertake a full service offering for the conversion of a Grade II Listed barn in Herefordshire. After a carefully managed planning process, including in depth discussions with the Conservation Officer, all permissions are in place and the build is well underway. The application involved management of a broad array of consultants, including a listed building consultant, a specialist engineer, ecologists to undertake bat surveys and measured building surveyors. Our design approach as been to respect the structures that are on the site and to develop them with a rural aesthetic. We have proposed maintaining the agricultural look from the roadside, and developing this with a more contemporary façade opening into the internal courtyard. The two buildings, both listed, are unified internally with a new connection resulting in a new 6 bedroom house. Technically, the building has to respond to the existing timber frame by maintaining a high degree of breathability in the new building fabric, leading us to implement a range of natural and sustainable building materials, such as sheep wool insulation and wood fibre board. The project also includes photovoltaic panels and a ground source heat pump system with the aim of being largely off grid. We are currently acting as contract administrators for the build.
