This award winning project is a significant part of the revitalisation of Carnaby Village by Shaftesbury PLC. The project area, with its own bespoke mix of uses and unique community spirit, includes Carnaby Street, Foubert’s Place and Kingly Street. The site was previously cleared and developed as a shopping centre in the late 1960s. Demolishing the shopping centre created the opportunity for a new high quality development that could accommodate a range of uses, make a positive contribution to the character of the area and better utilise the site’s full potential. The ‘L’ shaped site occupies a tight urban area enclosed on all sides, except for the two street elevations to Kingly Street and Foubert’s Place. Each street elevation conveys a subtly different environment, which in turn evokes subtly different architectural responses. Kingly Street accommodates the restaurant unit and access to offices. The simple brick façade of the elevation is complemented by the eye-catching mix of green and blue ceramics that drenches the street, creating a refreshing and welcoming ambience.
