A carefully crafted conversion with five connecting new and historic buildings, each individual in its originality. Situated in the heart of Fitzrovia, this striking development occupies a prominent position on the corner of Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street. The award winning scheme comprises thirteen beautifully crafted, bespoke apartments and ground floor retail units. The complex build combined differing characteristics with new contemporary aspects, sitting alongside retained Georgian elements and reconstructed traditional forms. The design approach was to preserve and enhance the best of the original building fabric and combine that with sensitive internal and external intervention. A visually stunning form is created that respects and enhances its immediate context. This was achieved with a play of materials, solid and transparent, which respond to the wider context. The arrangement is contemporary, whilst paying respect to the existing street pattern and modular repetition. Internally a number of the apartments were designed by Rolfe Judd Interiors to work in harmony with the unique architecture, included are elements inspired by the artisan neighbourhood and its artistry of handmade wares. The result is thoroughly contemporary, whilst retaining significant historical context and character. The project won the overall Grand Prix award at the Evening Standard New Homes Awards 2016 as well as its category Best Conversion. It was shortlisted for the Development of the Year in the Sunday Times British Homes Awards.
