Within a Conservation Area
Roger Mears Architects LLP , 19 Compton Terrace , London , N1 2UN , United Kingdom
No 67 is one of a row of ten houses developed around the 1840s, not listed but situated in the Barnsbury Conservation Area. It had been converted into 3 separate flats by Islington Council and was in a poor state of repair with an overgrown garden and dark basement. The brief was to convert the house back from flats into a single family dwelling, returning rooms to their original configuration as far as possible, to include a music room, media room, new family kitchen and bathrooms. This involved significant structural repairs and underpinning to remedy defects caused by settlement, external repairs, including roofing, brickwork and decorative stucco; new electrics, heating and plumbing. Details and features were retained where possible. The garden was redesigned and front and rear lightwells opened up with an extended rear terrace.
