New Build, Listed Building - Grade I
Rodney Melville + Partners Limited
Rodney Melville + Partners Limited , 10 Euston Place , LEAMINGTON SPA , Warwickshire , CV32 4LJ , United Kingdom
The Grade I listed Compton Verney House was comprehensively remodelled in the 1760’s to the designs of Robert Adam. Changes of ownership and periods of neglect in the latter part of the last century resulted in considerable decay to its fabric. Less than a decade ago the building was in a run down condition and its future looked bleak. Now in the hands of the Compton Verney House Trust, the building has been repaired and converted to a use that should ensure its long term survival. Working in collaboration with Stanton Williams Architects, in two phases (completed August 1997 and October 2003) the practice oversaw repair and conservation of internal and external historic fabric as part of conversion to galleries for the display of paintings and sculpture. The principal works of repair encompassed: repair of the external masonry; re-roofing; window repairs and improvements; all elements of the interior including the consolidation of walls and partitions, the strengthening of floors and the reinstatement of damaged decorative plasterwork, joinery and oak boarded floors. The total contract value for the repair and conversion works was £17 million. Repairs to the Adam bridge were also undertaken and further works to the chapel and park are currently under consideration.
