9 St Mary Abbot’s Place lies within a quiet cul-de-sac running South directly off Kensington High Street, London. The proposal seeks to replace an existing 20th century building and create five apartments over basement to second floor levels, each with a generous private outdoor amenity space. The scheme takes key references from neighbouring properties; developing the existing rhythm of the street elevation, whilst providing a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding Arts & Crafts heritage. The design responds to what is an unusually deep site which is enclosed by neighbouring properties and gardens. To protect neighbours’ views and preserve a sense of privacy, the proposed apartments are inward facing and arranged around landscaped courtyards. These courtyards provide the scheme with an abundance of natural light and amenity space. Basement level car parking is provided within the building via a concealed car stacker.
