The new Paul Webley Wing accommodates changing 21st Century learning needs through the creative yet sensitive re-use of Grade II* listed Senate House North Block, consolidating facilities into one building and providing a new student and academic social hub at the heart of the campus. One of the most significant accomplishments was the re-purposing of a redundant external courtyard through the integration of a feature double-curved glazed roof. The design adopts highest quality architectural detailing to deliver a ‘light-touch’ intervention, with columns sited away from the facades and curved and glazed beams maximising views of the existing courtyard elevations. The project also delivers 6,500sqm of refurbished accommodation, peeling back the layers of intervention and revealing original features of travertine clad walls, panelled ceilings and stone flooring. Carefully integrated new services have helped to achieve BREEAM Excellent, whilst a new entrance area and levelled access opens-up the lower levels and courtyard to increased public access. Awards include the AJ Retrofit, Education Estates, Building Design and Spaces Awards 2017.
