Cheltenham’s Crematorium required additional facilities, due to ageing equipment being unable to supply demand. The brief was to provide a new build crematorium containing two chapels, public waiting areas, staff facilities, and a crematory. We worked closely with Cheltenham Borough Council to develop the detailed brief. The building arrangement needed to be highly sensitive to the needs of the user. Circulation and flow are critical in the planning of the scheme, with separate routes for mourners and funeral corteges. A clear, legible arrangement is essential to help discretely separate the flow between funerals and avoid crossover between groups. The concept of the scheme was for a sensitive contemporary design that is appropriate to the 21st century, but respects the local context and character while providing much-needed modern cremation services. The design is appropriate to the site and balances the sense of drama with a comfortable human scale, creating beautiful spaces. The materials used give the necessary quality and longevity but are also routed in the local vernacular. High-quality materials have been used, including natural stone which respects the local context and suits the prestigious nature of this development. The design allows for lots of natural light and controlled, natural ventilation. This creates a comfortable and sensitive space for visitors.
