Our client’s objective was to add a new master suite to their two-bedroom Victorian house. The property is sited at the junction between two terraces with a triangular geometry which is duly expressed through the building footprint and roofscape. The house has a narrow footprint which means the original loftspace was limited in height and volume. To convert the loft, we raised the ridge and lowered the floor, gaining enough headroom to form a new open plan master suite with bedroom, dressing area and ensuite shower room. To the rear, a new dormer is clad in black anthra-zinc and fully glazed to provide panoramic views and maximise natural light within. White-painted tongue and groove boarding with oak tops and shelving give a light and contemporary feel to the interior. Although a freehold property, and proposed dormer volume within allowable limits, permitted development rights were not appropriate for this loft conversion due to the low ridge height. Through a sensitive approach to the design, we were able to achieve full planning permission to raise the ridge of the roof and create a dormer roof extension to the rear.
