Listed Building - Grade II
This project had a 2 page entry in the RIBA Conservation Sector Review 2011. The barn is a Grade II Listed Building it was unused and deteriorating. It was situated within the curtilage of a Grade II Listed farmhouse and formed the rear aspect from this building. A carefully designed scheme persuaded the Planning Authority to allow a linked extension to the barn, which was the key to meeting the accommodation brief. The existing metal roof was replaced with longstraw thatching, which attracted a fact-finding visit from the local Conservation Department. The works were designed to ensure the long-term preservation of the barn. Windows have been carefully placed to retain the main elevations in a barn-like appearance. Ancillary domestic accommodation was agreed to be built adjacent to the barn in a farm building style to allow the barn interior to be left, in part, as one large space. The old barn now contains two bedrooms and a dramatic open plan dining/kitchen area while the new timber-frame building contains two more bedrooms and a living room. The construction was completed within twelve months.
