Dorset
Sited in AONB, Sited in SSSI area, Within a Conservation Area
Richmond Bell Architects created the concept design for this contemporary new house on the World Heritage Site of the Jurassic Cliffs in Dorset to reflect the curves of the cliff and the historical walls, and maximise the panoramic views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. The house replaces a previous, dilapidated 1950s building but is more sensitive to the site, sitting further back from the street and working with the levels and contours of the house. The clients wanted to embrace the sea views, so the ocean-facing elevation is predominantly glazed, with overhanging eaves to reduce the solar glare and impact from the weather. Much of the facade is finished in stone to reflect the local context, including the historic boundary walls. The project is currently waiting for planning permission from Dorset Council.
