New Build
This five-bedroom home near Shaftesbury, Dorset, forms part of a Class Q barn conversion and is designed to operate entirely off-grid. Powered by a solar array and air-source heat pumps, sustainability is central to the scheme, with ICF construction delivering high levels of insulation and energy efficiency. The architecture balances contemporary and traditional elements, reflecting the clients’ differing tastes. The surrounding landscape was a key driver in the design, informing the building’s form, orientation and material palette. Natural materials were fundamental: locally sourced Marnhull stone sits alongside baked cedar cladding, rooting the house in its rural setting. A natural slate roof will weather over time, further softening the building’s form. Richmond Bell Architects oversaw both the design and construction stages, ensuring a cohesive and carefully delivered outcome.
