Resonant Architecture

31 Bartlemas Road , OXFORD , OX4 1XU

This private home in Headington, Oxford is located in a quiet back-street that descends gently towards Marston and is lined with mature trees. The house dates from the 1930s and was extended most recently in 2012. The brief called for increased space, a new kitchen and rationalisation at ground floor, new bedrooms and a playroom at first floor, a new garden room, and new high-quality finishes and services throughout. This extensive programme demanded significant volumetric increase. The design proposes a sensitive contemporary addition to the building, which responds to the architecture of the original while consciously demarcating the juncture between old and new. Traditional materials are re-imagined and applied to contemporary forms, showcasing their unique characteristics. Resonant Architecture were commissioned to design the extension and manage the project through to completion. At this stage the project has received a positive response from the Council in pre-application consultation and the main planning application is under consideration. Meanwhile we continue to progress detail design and a list of contractors for tendering. Once the planning permission is in place and a contractor appointed we will undertake administration of the building contract on behalf of the client.
