The site of our client's existing modest bungalow home offers unique opportunities to design something really special in its place. A back-land site, which would previously have been occupied by garages for the houses along Farnaby Road, the long southern site boundary is lined with mature trees and overlooks the adjacent golf course. The brief from our client was to design a two-storey 4/5 bedroom family home with ample living and entertaining space which better responds to the site, with a particular view to maximising privacy as well as views over the golf course. The proposed house is designed as two distinct flat roofed blocks which are set at an angle to one another in response to the cranked site footprint. The whole house has been designed to turn its back on the neighbouring houses along Farnaby Road, facing instead onto the golf course to the south. A lightweight, predominantly glazed, linking element accommodates the kitchen 'hub' at ground floor and creates a central courtyard between the two blocks with views over the golf course. The main block has a formal, symmetrical frontage with curved bay windows and a central covered porch fronting onto a mews-style cobbled access and driveway. The central entrance hallway has views through to the glazed Kitchen link as well as a double height element around the staircase with a gallery-style landing at the upper level. The smaller rear block houses living and dining rooms at ground floor, which both open up onto the garden, as well as a spacious master suite at first floor with its own roof terrace facing the golf course and overlooking the central private courtyard.
