The initial brief was to co-ordinate a refurbishment of some of the guestrooms and public areas. This was soon expanded to major structural interventions including a number of extensions, a replacement of the services infrastructure and a total restoration of all guestrooms, public areas and back-of-house. A new steel structure replaced the original masonry riverfront structure and the suspended faience facade was stabilised and restored along with the pantile roof and all the glazing. Working in close collaboration with interior design company, Pierre-Yves Rochon, ReardonSmith created new guestrooms using original design details and mouldings whilst original Art Deco details were restored to their original condition. A new lift shaft and stair were created and a seven-metre diameter stained glass dome was introduced within the renovated and rejuvenated interiors, returning light into the heart of the ground floor level of the building. Many of the spaces were returned looking just as they did before; other areas were "rediscovered" to become glamorous new spaces, but, whether new or restored, all works were to match exactly with the historic fabric of the hotel that belonged either to the Edwardian or Art Deco periods. Whilst not a museum, the Savoy has been reinvigorated as an historic and familiar building fit to be a luxury 21st Century hotel icon.
