Reading + West were commissioned to redesign the kitchen and garden room of this beautiful detached house located moments from Kew Gardens. The house had been extended with a Victorian style conservatory in the past which leaked and overheated in the summer. The client wanted a room that could be used all year round and still enjoy views of the garden and good natural light. We created a new garden room with large corner sliding glass doors that allow the space to be unzipped in the summer. The roof over sails the extension and seems to float on glass supported in one corner on the most slender column. A long flat slot roof light meets a full height glazed screen where the house and extension meet allowing light into the existing house and preserving the legibility of the existing house where new meets old. We also worked on the interiors and designed a new bespoke kitchen, floor finishes throughout the ground floor, bespoke living room joinery and bathrooms.
