Keen to meet their needs for a clean, contemporary home for their family, we were able to manipulate the strict vernacular of the road, acknowledging traditional styles with an introduction of playful brick work on the front facade. While opening the back up with expansive glass and strong forms. Indicative of the Art’s and Craft’s movement the original house would have been designed under. Internally the clients wanted to adopt open plan living, and we were able to introduce this through fewer, but larger rooms which are naturally lit from sliding doors out to the garden and sky lights. With sustainability something of a great importance to both us and our client, the new build will be designed to certified Passivhaus standards - reducing living costs, and the family’s carbon footprint. Further to this we wanted to push the building to be sustainable in its construction. Designing the contemporary home out of CLT (cross laminated timber) will shorten construction time in comparison to brick or steel, as it is prepared off site. The use of CLT in buildings also improves thermal conductivity, allowing some reduction in the use of insulation. It also reduces thermal bridging - something that is highly beneficial when designing to Passivhaus standards. SE21
