The practice was instrumental in the delivery of a new adult learning facility in North End, Portsmouth for Portsmouth City Council. Having developed a series of feasibility options with the city council at the inception of the scheme, we were later approached by the contracting team to assist in delivering a successful tender bid and subsequent detail design for the development of The Learning Place. The bid was won by designing in added value to the scheme with a well considered approach to the buildings internal layout, extension and overall presentation. Notably this included creating a contemporary, welcoming entrance facade that utilised the principal structural components of the existing building to give the building far greater appeal and presence despite being partially obscured by it’s neighbours. This was executed in low maintenance, vandal resistant materials that befitted the end users requirements. The rear extension added space for a creche and dedicated IT learning suite, which were completed with contemporary detail. This was continued throughout the refurbishment of the original building, with rendered panels, aluminium flashings and windows all combining to creative a single cohesive appearance. The practice worked closely with all parties in the detailed design of the new extension to ensure that the scheme was deliverable on the very tight, landlocked site. An early decision to adopt a stick built timber frame solution allowed for easier coordination of materials and deliveries, whilst careful design also ensured that waste material was kept to a minimum.
