New Build
Speenhamland Primary School is located in the heart of Newbury and has been extended several times in the past to keep up with the demand for additional teaching space. An existing 1950’s classroom block, located opposite the main school building with the school’s playground in between was demolished to make space for a new 2 classroom building. The site was very restricted, with existing and mature trees and a public footpath leading along the back of the building, the school’s dining block to its right, the school’s hard playing surface to its front and a private nursery to its left and all of them in very close proximity. This meant that the available space had to be facilitated as efficiently as possible and to still meet the school’s requirement for 2 new classrooms with ancillary functions. The design of the building is a combination of traditional design with contemporary features. The elevation facing the footpath and the neighbouring properties were constructed in traditional brickwork with a conventional tiled roof, whereas the elevation facing the school’s playground was timber cladded with a stepped down zinc roof, which allowed for high level windows to improve the natural daylight provision within this new teaching space. Large window with deep internal window cills do create a connection between the inner teaching space with the external area surrounding the building. The school has made great use of the deep window cills by using them as seating areas or using them as quiet areas within a busy classroom. After only six months on site and a completion on time, the school was able to take possession of their new teaching area ready to start into a new school year. The re-named ‘ACE Building’ was officially opened in September 2011.
