Listed Building - Grade II*
In collaboration with BAE Systems, the practice has provided architectural design services for a number of complex projects within HM Royal Naval Dockyard in Portsmouth. BAE Systems provide support services to the Royal Navy ranging from planned maintenance regimes to emergency repairs whenever and wherever they are required. The building stock has undergone a variety of changes and adaptation over the years as the needs of the country’s Armed Forces have evolved. Victorian boathouses, munitions stores and warehouses have all seen adaptation and alteration, sometimes in an unsympathetic manner, to meet these changing needs. The practice completed proposals for the repair and renovation of the Old Iron Foundry, a Grade II* Listed Building, to become the head office for BAE Systems within the Naval Base. Originally built as a foundry and smithery c1857-61 it was later extended in 1878 as part of the redevelopment of the dockyard for the steam-powered navy. This building had been adapted on an ad-hoc basis internally with partitioning and false ceilings leaving large parts of the building disused. Detailed design proposals were developed for the remodelling of the building to provide a new main entrance, reception space, meeting rooms and circulation areas to provide access to existing office areas within the building. This required careful development through consultation with English Heritage and the local Conservation team to ensure that the resultant design could be successfully delivered. Paint finishes to the brick walls, brick jack arches and ironwork were removed and original features restored to their original state before the space was adapted to its current use.
