Arun
Within a Conservation Area, New Build
With space for development at a premium in the center of Arundel the practice was delighted to be invited to undertake a full service for the development of 2 one off houses in the town centre. The scheme is situated on a small landlocked site and accessed via a public car park. It is surrounded on two sides by residential development, accentuated in height by rising ground which made overlooking and privacy a prime concern. The four walls bounding the site formed and intrisic part of the conservation area and had to be retained, limiting access and potential outlook. As such, two units were carefully designed to abut the wall bounding the car park, with a clerestory located above the wall. The principal living rooms, located to the rear feature large glazed areas that open out onto a shared courtyard, with privacy being maintained by bespoke pergolas, carefully designed to obscure the view to and from the neighbouring 3 storey development. The buildings have been completed with contemporary detailing using a traditional palette of materials, including natural slate and waney edged boards, which complement the historic context of the site.
