RGP were appointed to design a Waitrose supermarket by the John Lewis Partnership as part of its expansion programme in the south east. RGP have developed two foodstores for Waitrose in the London region, one at South Woodford and the other at Mill Hill. The South Woodford store was completed under a traditional JCT 80 contract and opened for trading in 1999. At Mill Hill, the procurement was by construction management and the store opened in 2003. Both stores have gross internal floor areas of approximately 22,500 sq.ft. At South Woodford, a restored Grade II listed Victorian house formed part of the scheme by providing office accommodation for administration staff. At Mill Hill, the new store formed part of a larger development of retail, leisure, offices and residential estate. Materials used include brick, reformed stone and metal cladding panels. Glazing is predominantly double glazed thermally broken aluminium curtain walling.
