Worthing based charity, St Barnabas, wanted to expand its provision of specialist end-of-life care, and commissioned rhp to design their new accommodation, offering increased capacity and improved facilities. The new Hospice provides care for up to 20 in-patients at any one time. It also houses an expanded community nursing team and is able to offer a much wider range of therapies to all patients including visiting day patients. Paramount in our proposals was the comfort, respect and care for those with life-limiting diseases. The in-patient unit services are at the heart of the new Hospice building. Bedrooms radiate out from this core in clusters of four. Each of the rooms has as an assisted, en-suite bathroom and a shared communal lounge. The petal like formation of the building is surrounded by landscaped ornamental gardens and cascading water features visible and, when windows are open, audible from all the rooms. Extending beyond these gardens lies a naturalistic landscape of meadow and wetland features including a lake and rain- collecting swales connecting to deep bore soakaways. A mature woodland surrounds the site providing a natural backdrop together with a good level of privacy.
