Shelter Hall was built in the 1880’s as part of the historic Kings Road Arches on the Brighton seafront. In 2013 the building was found to have serious structural weaknesses and the building was vacated. rhp were appointed in February 2017 as architects for the detailed design and reconstruction of the existing buildings, which were completely demolished. The £6.5m new building is a larger version of the original Shelter Hall, built in a similar Victorian style. The main building is two storeys high and includes a partial mezzanine floor, and is now in use as a shop / food hall. It also contains new, accessible public toilets. A new rotunda on the upper promenade provides additional café / restaurant space of around 100 square metres. A wooden kiosk, dating from the 1880s and located on the upper level of Shelter Hall has been restored and rebuilt on the upper promenade 200 metres to the east of the building.
