R E Quinn Architects acted as Lead Consultant of a Multi-Disciplinary Team for a replacement Church Hall and Visitor Centre at the historic Saul Church of Ireland, Downpatrick. The client was the Select Vestry together with stakeholders from NITB & Ulster Wildlife Trust. Although Planning was in place, there was a desire to revisit the design and an amended Planning Application was submitted by REQA. The complexity was apparent due to the sensitive historic nature & archaeological value of the site & its importance as part of St Patricks Trail. Faculties were obtained from the Diocese, in addition to co-ordinating the Archaeological Consultants to ensure excavation licenses & Program of Works coincided with the Construction Programme. Due to funding and timescale constraints, a full Design & Construction Programme with Key Dates was developed to describe each stage, with roles & responsibilities of all consultants outlined. The site complexities, with the proximity of graves, headstones & a Listed stone wall to the proposed building wall and a boundary party retaining wall shared with the neighbour, added to the topography created difficult & compact building conditions.
