This sensitive refurbishment and extension of a Grade 2* listed Georgian townhouse in Bloomsbury, London is for two eminent fashion designers and their young family. The nearly 200 year old property was in significant disrepair and great care was taken to preserve and reconstruct the character of the building’s original design in the historic spaces. A contemporary mews and link were introduced to form the family’s kitchen and playroom, opening on to a landscaped external courtyard. By adopting a design-led approach, the building expresses its function clearly for the client and successfully marries contextual sensitivity with contemporary urban living. Two centuries of alteration and poor repairs had reduced the architectural clarity of the original design of this Grade 2* listed Georgian townhouse in Bloomsbury, London. The property was left with unresolved and underlying issues with it’s structure and existing listed items, therefore interventions were required to return the building back to the original state of a single family dwelling. By carefully interpreting the building’s history, we were able to overcome these significant challenges.
