This modest building is a recent addition to a row of beach houses in Lee-Over-Sands, a remote hamlet community near Clacton-on-Sea. The brief from our clients, two artists; called for a simple and modern holiday retreat and studio, with two bedrooms, a bathroom and generous living space. Our design also included a large low level storage area for leisure equipment, and a sheltered terrace to take in the expansive views. This seemingly humble yet technically complex project and its success as a self-build, relied on a close dialogue between Quinn Architects and the clients. Owing to their own particular sculptural language, the artist clients preferred to show the the real material of all the elements and structures. Their appreciation of materials informed the use of exposed concrete and resin, and an overall look distinguished by clean-lined geometric forms.
