The multi award-winning Shire Hall is the transformation, both internally and externally, of a tired and inefficient 1960’s building into a state-of-the-art office facility and architectural landmark to enhance the regeneration of the historic city of Gloucester. The aim for Gloucestershire County Council was to provide facilities fit for the future, with the overriding refurbishment objective of reducing maintenance and running costs. A leading Sustainable Architectural practice since 1984, Quattro rose to the challenge, designing a highly sustainable workplace that has been responsibly and dynamically transformed over 120 weeks and 85 phases - with the building remaining operational throughout. Working collaboratively with Kier and the wider team, sustainable ingenuities included the use of Thinfilm Technology and Building Integrated Photo Voltaics, BIPVS (new to the UK) in the external cladding system. The BIPVS generate electricity, and this, with the improved thermal envelope, high levels of insulation and natural ventilation strategy with integrated vents into the building fabric, mean the development is self-sufficient, producing 1/3 of its annual energy requirements. An exemplar building contributing to GCC’s strategic sustainability goals by 2030. Shire Hall is no longer an eye sore; its new tenants inspired by this transformation and the inclusive, welcoming environment.
