The brief for westdene meadows was to design a contemporary family home within the garden of the clients existing bungalow and neighbouring property. The surrounding buildings set a precedent for the new dwelling as a chalet bungalow. Westdene meadows echoes this in style and proportions. Contemporary internal design maximises light and views and creates space for a minimal cantilervered oak staircase with frameless glass balustrades. Centred under roof lights and with dramatic artificial lighting, the staircase becomes a feature within the house both day and night. The final design provides contemporary open plan family living with a sense of drama and light that belies its more traditional external appearance.
