Auckland Castle, developed from the 12th century onwards, was the former palatial retreat of the Prince Bishops of Durham. At its core the site now comprises multiple heritage assets with the Grade I listed castle as the centrepiece, complete with 17th century chapel and state rooms. As part of a Purcell-led design team our heritage consultancy team prepared several heritage appraisals to inform and support the major rehabilitation of the castle. Our conservation plan and heritage impact assessments were used to secure planning and listed building consents for the conservation and upgrade of the castle, together with a new-build development located within the castle grounds. Having successfully assisted Auckland Castle Trust in securing funding, Purcell is currently leading the delivery of this project to achieve the Trust's vision to transform Auckland Castle into a faith, art and heritage destination of international significance, reinvigorating the town of Bishop Auckland and the wider area.
