The 16th century Dillington House is Grade I listed and set in beautiful countryside. Somerset County Council wanted to develop a residential centre for disabled artists and adult learning as part of its adult education programme. Built in the historic gardens, Purcell designed 'The Hyde', a new building that provides residential accommodation for up to sixteen artists as well as common facilities, performance spaces and studios. The brief was to ensure that new development integrated well with the existing Jacobean house, a 1970s gallery and a small theatre within the old coach house. The primary goal of the new building was to enhance and extend the creative learning environment of Dillington House while also providing fully accessible facilities for its residents. The contemporary design is set within a steeply sloping walled garden and accessed from the courtyard below and is planned so that all key spaces have views of the Somerset Levels. The first floor is designed as a large black box that cantilevers over the garden walls. The building includes two new 100sqm studios, a new sculpture court and gardens, 15 twin/double rooms, a dining room and new access and parking.
