The neo-Gothic museum is a striking example of Victorian architecture famed for its cathedral-like, expansive iron and glass roof, for which Purcell was appointed to restore and clean. This involved accessing 8,500 diamond-shaped textured glass panels four stories above the museum’s exhibition space, replacing broken glass, cleaning the painted metal work and timber, laser cleaning the internal colonnade and installing both discrete and feature light fittings. The museum remained open throughout, with a few notable exhibits like the dinosaur skeletons kept in situ, carefully protected. As a result of the project, the Oxford museum's unique architectural details have been restored to their former glory for visitors and locals to admire and enjoy.
