Situated in Gunton Park on the banks of Hanworth Broad, this intriguing newbuild was constructed on three surviving brick vaults of a 19th-century boathouse to a design closely informed by its predecessor. The setting, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest lying within a historic 18th-century park, was acutely sensitive, and the superstructure of the old boathouse was thought to have been lost in the early 20th -century; any new intervention required careful consideration. The team’s understanding of sensitive sites, their technical expertise and sympathetic design were crucial for securing planning consent for the project. The structure, erected on site in just two days, is a green oak frame. The roof was thatched with Norfolk reeds by a local thatcher. The boathouse has a composting toilet draining to a reed bed and natural wool insulation. It has its own borehole for water and is heated by a wood burning stove.
