Liverpool
£10m to £49.99M
St. George’s Hall is Liverpool’s principal civic building and arguably the finest neoclassical building in Europe. During the late 20th Century, the building suffered under investment and, in the 1980s, was closed to the public. Purcell was asked to design a scheme for this iconic building to initiate its renaissance as an active, multifunctional venue at the heart of Liverpool’s heritage and cultural life. An extensive Conservation and Strategic Plan was required to prioritise the hall’s restoration, its renaissance as a sustainable multifunctional venue and its preservation for future generations. The practice was appointed as lead consultants and project managers at this key stage and to secure funding for the project. Within 12 months, the team had secured Phase I funding of £18m and obtained a further £5m for Phase II, primarily through the Heritage Lottery Fund, with support from many others. Planning permission, listed building consent and building regulations approvals were also achieved. Working closely with the professional team, the practice’s key staff used their leadership, management, design and technical skills to deliver the client’s vision to the highest standards.
