The historically significant but increasingly derelict Grade II listed Market Hall in Holyhead, Wales, has been transformed into a modern, sustainable community and learning centre. The conservation and regeneration created a hub at the heart of the town that houses a library, multi-purpose spaces and functions for both visitors and the local community to enjoy, meet and learn. The scheme has introduced new internal spaces and measures to futureproof and ensure greater environmental sustainability, celebrating a landmark steeped in communal identity with a contemporary feel and dynamic future. Purcell undertook a Feasibility Study to identify new uses for the hall, then were appointed to develop the chosen scheme and assist Anglesey County Council in the preparation of a successful £2.375m Heritage Lottery Fund grant application. This, together with further grants from Welsh Government and ERDF, has enabled the delivery of the vision for the building’s revitalisation into a modern information, business and community hub, construction costs totalling £3.3 million. Opened in August 2019, the Market Hall provides a new home for Holyhead Library along with the Island’s local history collections and new spaces for learning, training and community and business activities.
