St Fagans is the most visited Museum in Wales and is one of the biggest open air museums in Europe. Purcell were commissioned to undertake a major project to re-display the collection galleries, to significantly improve the visitor welcome, orientation and welfare facilities and to create a major new learning centre. The main building is a Grade II listed structure designed by the Percy Thomas Partnership, a singular purpose built museum buildings of the 1960's and 70's. Working closely with Museum staff and exhibition consultants team, Purcell undertook the technical repair and conservation of the built fabric, modernizing environmental control and the design and build of a substantial new extension and atrium. The design complements the building’s strong architectural composition and allows visitors to circulate from one level to the next, through key exhibition areas, before reaching the outdoor museum. Since its re-opening in 2018 the project has won multiple awards, including a clean sweep of the RSAW (RIBA) 2019 Project, Conservation and Project of the year Awards.
