Listed Building - Grade II
Tramsheds Tech , Unit D , Tramshed , Pendyris Street , CARDIFF , CF11 6BH
The Art Deco pavilion was built in 1929 and primarily used as a dancehall in the 20th century. The building, which is Grade II listed, was in poor condition and was little used. Informed by extensive historic research and the conservation management plan, Purcell led the building's restoration as an entertainment venue with multi-purpose uses. These included a large internal space for entertainment, performance and community use, a gallery, cinema, cafe and observatory. The principal techniques adopted to conserve or reuse the pavilion's original material were predominantly repairs to the ferro-concrete fabric which had suffered significant condensation problems. Purcell's scheme retained the building's visual prominence with a new roof featuring shiny 'fish scale' metal coverings and decorative metalwork sheeting. To create multi-use spaces, some of the internal spaces and the ends of the building were subdivided and building services upgraded throughout. In the main hall, the original proscenium arch and ribs were left exposed and accessibility was improved with ramps and a new lift.
