Cardigan Castle has been a prominent feature of the ancient port town of Cardigan since 1176 and was the birthplace of the national Eisteddfod. The castle fell into major disrepair during the 20th century and has now reopened following a 10 year, £11m repair and conversion project led by Purcell. The first phase repaired the Castle’s curtain walls enabling the removal of the steel shores that had been supporting them. Phase two repaired, conserved and upgraded six buildings within the castle walls supported by a community led archaeological programme. The options appraisal highlighted the need for additional income revenues to ensure the scheme financially viable and so Purcell built in holiday accommodation, small business workspace, conference facilities and a restaurant into the conserved fabric of the Castle. The project is an exemplar demonstration of what a committed community and regeneration scheme can achieve in helping establish a historic town as a visitor destination.
