Purcell were appointed by GLYPT (Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre) to re-design the historic Transformer Building. The design team are working collaboratively with consultants in M&E, Acoustics, Access, Structural Engineering and Theatre. The scheme aims to make the site fully accessible, re-compose internal spaces to allow for multiple uses, improve facilities, provide a series of new engaging spaces for further community use and extend facilities to attract a wider range of user groups. Along with the rest of the design team Purcell attended user group engagement meetings, where they met and presented to people of all ages and situations. This allowed the resultant design to appeal to all with a building that accommodates the required space, flexibly, and security. Accessibility was a principle objective of the client, and Purcell provided an improved design that simplified the existing 7 changes in floor level down to only 2. The simplified access strategy with the inclusion of a public lift means that there will be no limits to any building user.
