Purcell oversaw the HLF funded restoration of the Grade II* listed Sacrewell Watermill, and rejuvenation of the site as a learning centre and local attraction. The brief was to provide a visitor route through the 18th Century mill, Millhouse and bakery, to create residential accommodation for millwright training courses and office accommodation to support the mill’s operation. Extensive repairs and conservation works were carried out to the timber framed Collyweston stone slate roofs and to the Millpond retaining wall to address damaging water ingress. The refurbished mill accommodates new interpretation and education space. The Mills repaired machinery is an interactive part of the visitor experience and includes a new hydro-electric wheel turbine within the redundant northern wheel pit for on-site energy generation. Level access was created to the mill and mill house ground floor, garden routes introduced and a new external stone stair provided to access the first and second floor residential accommodation.
