Purcell led the creation of Kresen Kernow which boldly reconfigures the derelict buildings of the former Redruth Brewery in the UNESCO “Cornish Mining” World Heritage Site, providing a new county archive and social studies centre. By sensitively combining historic fabric with striking new interventions, a characterful new home has been created for the world’s largest collection of archive material recording the people, places, history and culture of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Successive arson attacks had devastated the once illustrious brewery buildings, leaving a large, decaying site adjacent to the main arterial route into Redruth. Through the careful repair of historic building fabric, and addition of new accommodation, Kresen Kernow is now an exemplar of sustainable reuse and placemaking, incorporating flood alleviation features, new public realm landscaping, and a public art installation.
